What Makes a Meal?

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) requires students paying the set meal price or receiving free meals to select menu components that meet the meal pattern. The meal pattern consists of FIVE components: meat/meat alternate, grain, fruit, vegetable and milk.

If the minimum number of components for each meal are not selected by the student, a la carte prices will be charged.

Breakfast:

● Must choose at least three of the four offered items to make a meal.
● Must choose one fruit or a juice as one of the items to receive the meal price.

● Must choose at least three of the five offered components to make a meal.
● Must choose at least a half cup of fruit or vegetable to receive the meal price.

● Extra entrees, extra sides, chips, cookies, etc. are all charged a la carte prices and are not included in the meal.
● For example, if a student gets a meal of chicken smackers, mashed potatoes, and milk, but wants an extra portion of chicken smackers, the extra portion is not considered a part of the meal and will be charged an additional $3.00.
● If a parent wishes to restrict a la carte purchases, please contact the Child Nutrition Office.

Student Welfare Wellness and Health Service

Wellness Policy Triennial Assessment

The SHAC is a parent and community advisory group mandated by legal and local policies. The majority of SHAC members are parents and the remaining members include district coordinated school health representatives and community members. If you are interested in becoming a member, please contact Shellie Winkler via e-mail. swinkler@conroeisd.net

The broad purpose of the School Health Advisory Council is to ensure the District’s health education instruction reflects local community values. The SHAC is also responsible for considering issues and making recommendations related to the following eight components:

  • Health Education
  • Healthy and Safe School Environments
  • Counseling and Mental Health Services
  • Parent and Community Involvement
  • Staff Wellness Promotion
  • Health Services
  • Physical Education
  • Nutrition Services

In addition, the SHAC is responsible for coordinating the development, review, and implementation of the district’s wellness policy and making recommendations to the school board for any updates needed.

All students in CISD have been issued a six-digit ID number. All Campuses are equipped with computerized point-of-sale stations where students enter their assigned ID number or swipe a card in order to access their accounts. This number stays with the student when they transfer between campuses. Parents may contact the cafeteria manager if they would like to restrict their child’s a la carte purchases or set daily spending limits.

Parents are welcome to eat with their child in the cafeteria; however, pre-paid money on student accounts cannot be used for non-student meals. The software system used will not allow this. Cash or checks are accepted for parent meals.

Parents are encouraged to prepay for their child’s meals. Prepayments can be made on-line using the direct link on the homepage or go to https://www.myschoolbucks.com/. Please allow up to 48 hours for payments to be applied to students’ accounts. There is a $2.75 charge per transaction to use the on-line payment system.

Prepayments can also be made in the cafeteria before classes begin. Checks and prepayment envelopes with cash should include the child’s name, ID number and grade to ensure crediting to the proper account. Checks should be made payable to CISD Child Nutrition and include Driver’s License # and Date of Birth. CISD allows students to charge meals if funds are unavailable in a student meal account. Repayment of these charges can be made online by credit card or in the cafeteria by cash/check.

CONROE ISD CHECK ACCEPTANCE POLICY

Effective October 13, 2009

In the event that a check written to any Conroe ISD cafeteria or District Office is returned unpaid by your bank, Conroe ISD or it’s agent (Envision) will redeposit your check electronically. Additionally, you understand and agree that we may electronically collect a returned check fee of $30.00 plus applicable sales tax. The use of a check for payment is your Acknowledgement and Acceptance of this policy and its terms. You may reach Envision at (877) 290-5460. If you have a returned check, we cannot accept checks from you for the remainder of the school year.

Any discrepancies on student accounts must be brought to the attention of CISD Child Nutrition within 1 month of the transaction in order to obtain a refund. No refunds will be given for purchases more than 1 month after the transaction.

Under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, a “person with a disability” is any person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, has a record of such an impairment or is regarded as having such an impairment.

The term “physical or mental impairment” includes many diseases and conditions, a few of which may be orthopedic, visual, speech and hearing impairments; cerebral palsy; epilepsy; muscular dystrophy; multiple sclerosis; cancer; heart disease; metabolic diseases, such as diabetes or phenylketonuria (PKU); food anaphylaxis (severe food allergy); mental retardation; emotional illness; drug addiction and alcoholism; specific learning disabilities; HIV disease and tuberculosis.

If a child requires a menu modification due to a disability, a meal substitution request form must be completed by a medical authority. Once the form is complete, it should be returned to the school nurse. The Child Nutrition Department will then be notified to provide reasonable meal accommodations. Please allow up to 10 business days. The parent/ nurse will be notified of the starting date for meal service.

For students with special dietary needs that do not have a disability, nutrition information can be provided to the parent upon request for the parent to determine which menu items the child will eat. Please contact Robyn Hughes by email at rhughes@conroeisd.net for any additional nutrition information.

Fryers

CISD does not have deep fryers in any of our schools. All items are baked or steamed.

Fruits and Vegetables

Our kitchens are equipped with specially designed produce washing systems to mechanically wash and sanitize our produce to prevent foodborne illnesses. The process makes the produce safer by removing harmful bacteria and more appealing to students by removing any waxy build-up or coatings.

Child Nutrition offers a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables weekly to all grade levels.

USDA Meal Requirements

Child Nutrition is a federally funded program administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). School districts participating in the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs must agree to abide by all USDA guidelines in order to receive reimbursem*nt for the meals served to students.

Many people do not realize the stringent nutritional guidelines that meals must meet. School breakfasts and lunches must meet Federal nutrition requirements, but decisions about what specific foods to serve and how they are prepared are made by local school food authorities. Current regulations require schools to meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which recommend that no more than 30 percent of an individual’s calories come from fat, and less than 10 percent from saturated fat.
