It is surely not the last word on Drake, but it puts him before us in more detail than anyone else has tried to since Drake's own time. Cummins' approach is unusual in one important and admirable respect: He has no discernible "point of view" toward his subject. He is neither hero-worshipper nor debunker. He tries to see his subject steadily and whole and to let the reader decide whether Drake was, on balance, great or deeply flawed. Biographers can pull off such a trick when their subject has been dead, as Drake now has, for 400 years.
In addition to workmanlike accounts of Drake's various voyages 'as Queen Elizabeth's chief sea lord in her holy war against Catholic Spain, we get estimates of Drake as a person, many of them drawn from contemporary sources. He was a rabid antiCatholic (which suited Elizabeth's purpose just fine), damned by the Spanish as a mere smashand-grab-heretic as he assaulted, looted and burned Spanish colo-: nial cities from the Canary Islands to both coasts of South America. Drake, long since grown rich on the proceeds of his earlier ventures, did not let such things bother him. Cummins manages to convey the subtleties and maritime complexities of Drake's predatory voyages without getting lost too often in seagoing jargon. His writing is clear and lively, and by the time you reach the end you do indeed know a pinnance from galliot. This is admirable objective and highly readable history.
